Prayer of the Week

Prayer from Southern Africa

In word and deed, in loving and caring, in sharing and compassion, in participation and confrontation; Lord, speak your word to us all, give us ears to listen and willingness to be involved with and for one another, and a spirit of obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Tidings They Are A-Changin'

In the next few weeks, you will see a significant revision to the Online Tidings. Items of general interest and feature articles will be limited to an expanded version published the first week of every month. Remaining weeks will be a shortened version, limited to new items of a time-sensitive nature, the weekly calendar feature and links to our standing notices. If you have an article or idea to submit, please email it to the grace.episcopal.church@gmail.com general church address. Thank you to all of you who have provided feedback to the editor. We appreciate your interest, and are eager to hear from you at any time.

Events at The Church of St. Michael the Archangel...Mark Your Calendars!

A phone call to Rev. Paul Lautenschlager, Rector at St. Michael's, caught him helping to prepare an evening meal for 100 guests on Tuesday night with his wife Nancy. Nonetheless, he was most pleased to provide details on some upcoming events at The Church of St. Michael the Archangel which may be of interest to Grace Episcopal parishioners:

50th Anniversary Service

St. Michael's will be holding its 50th anniversary service on Sunday, September 30th at 10:00 am. This church was started as a mission of Grace Church and our own vestryperson, David Watts, will observe our relationship by providing a greeting for this occasion. Father Richard Palmer, the first rector at St. Michael's, will preach. Everyone is invited to attend the service and the luncheon to follow.

Episcopal Hymn Festival

St. Michael's will host the Episcopal Hymn Festival, sponsored by the Colorado Springs Episcopal churches, on Sunday November 4th at 4:00 pm. Choirs from six different regional churches, including Grace Episcopal, are expected to attend and sing in a spirit of unity and service to our Lord. There will also be a number of instrumentalists performing. Musicians should arrive at 3:00 PM for a warm-up.

All local Episcopalians are urged to attend this event with such a remarkable collection of performances available in one service.

Women Celebrating Women

The Searchers' Group at First Christian is sponsoring this weekend exhibit and sale of exquisite hand-crafted home decor, personal accessories -- baskets, ceramics, jewelry, textiles and more. The funds raised by this event will assist women in developing countries throughout the world to share their gifts and gain independence. Come to the Chapel on Friday, October 5th, and Saturday, October 6th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and on Sunday, October 7th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Notice -- Change of Meeting Places -- October 2nd and 4th

Because of the Women Celebrating Women event this week, the service of Holy Communion on Tuesday, October 2nd, Fr. Michael's Bible Study and Brown Bag will meet in the Fellowship Hall instead of the Chapel. On Thursday, October 4th the Healing Service will be held at noon at 1627 North Nevada, thanks to the hospitality of Jill and Harold Wasinger. All are invited to these mid-week activities.

Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei . . . and, yes, Kyrie

Following a desire to create a setting appropriate for our Episcopal church, the staff and clergy have decided to include all components of the mass as determined by the Book of Common Prayer. A full mass is also more traditional and consistent with the earliest church settings. This means that we will be adding a Kyrie just before the Gloria near the beginning of the service.

The Merbecke setting will be used from Advent through Lent.
The Mathias Gloria will be added From Christmas until Lent.
The Willan setting will be used for the rest of the year (including now).

Grace Episcopal Directory

A preliminary directory for our parish has been printed, and will be available before and after services in the Fellowship Hall. While the proofreaders were very careful, we fully expect that there will be some entry errors. Please let us know what needs to be corrected by emailing the church at grace.episcopal.church@gmail.com or calling 328-1125 to leave a message. A $2 donation will be requested for a copy of the directory.

New Women's Group Forming

Since the departure of our beloved Linda Seracuse, we have had no Women of Grace activities, and now is time to begin again. Previously, we met for potluck and fellowship, then had a program of interest presented either by a guest or one of our very own parishioners with stories to tell! This group may decide after a time to join the Episcopal Church Women. At the moment, our only participation is the Episcopal Thrift House, which operates under the auspices of the ECW. Please contact Sherry Brown at 488-9783 to join up.

Diocesan Regional Meeting

On Saturday, September 22nd, a large delegation from Grace Church was warmly welcomed at the Sangre de Cristo regional meeting held at Christ Church in Canyon City. Our participation in the quarterly diocesan regional meetings has been limited in recent years, as has our support for funding our regional activities.

The representatives from many churches in the region heard a report from the Standing Committee which covered both the status of the action concerning Don Armstrong and the property dispute with the secessionist Grace Church. We were informed of the leases signed for the former Holy Spirit and St. Frances properties, which will help fund the land acquisition for the Church of the Good Shepard in Briargate. We selected Scott Campbell of St. Matthias to be our nominee for a clergy position on the Standing Committee. We were given presentations of the diocesan budget to be approved at the convention this week by Canon Neil Riley, the diocesan mission strategy and the collaboration strategy for the Colorado Springs area.

Our delegation was led by Fr. Michael, and included Ed Brown, Sherry Brown, Bruce MacHaffie, Helen Hazelton, Chuck Theobald and David Watts.

National Cathedral Centennial

Our National Cathedral is 100 years old. The event will be commemorated by a reenactment of the laying of the cornerstone on September 29th. Birthday cake will be served all day. For more information about the Cathedral, visit the website at www.cathedral.org. For great views of the gargoyles, visit the Colorado Chapter website.

Mothers of Preschoolers

A joint group of mothers from First Christian and Grace Episcopal churches are meeting to provide a space in busy lives for encouragement, friendship and Christian fellowship. The goal of MOPS (Mother's of Preschoolers) is to provide a haven for soothing frazzled moms; an opportunity to build lifelong friendships; an accepting atmosphere with encouraging discussions; and a time when women can receive practical advice on family life from a Biblical perspective.

Using the book Dwelling -- Living Fully from the Space You call Home, Deacon Sally Ziegler from Grace will lead the discussions during the first semester. Robyn Lee will serve as the leader from FCC and Tami Eckholm from Grace. Invitations have been issued to the mothers from St. Michael's and the Chapel of Our Saviour. Child care will be provided for babies and pre-school children.

The next meeting is October 4th. For information please call Tami Ekholm at 522-1976 or Mary Lou Porter at 599-5548.

Flu Shot Clinic

The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) will be giving the flu shots on Tuesday, October 16th in the Fellowship Hall of First Christian. This clinic will be from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Please bring your friends and neighbors. The cost of the shot is $25. VNA accepts Medicare Part B, Rocky Mountain HMO and Secure Horizons. Bring your card with you.

VNA uses the proceeds from these clinics to provide home health care for low income and indigent families and individuals.

Upcoming Concerts at First Christian

On Sunday, October 7th, First Christian Church presents the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, directed by Thomas Wilson, performing - Scarlatti Portfolio by Benjamin Lees, Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 with Susan Grace, Bizet Symphony in C Major. Tickets are $8 for the concert, which begins at 3:00 pm.

Sunday, October 14th, brings the opportunity to hear the Amuse, Early Instrument Ensemble directly after our service at 3:00 pm. They will perform a selection of sonatas and canzonas from the 17th and 18th century, played on recorders, cornetto, cello, harpsichord and organ. Come and enjoy the unique sounds of these ancient instruments. A free will offering will be taken.

Grace Bibliophiles

After exploring the early days of our city and its locale in Irving Howbert's Memoirs of a Lifetime in the Pike Peak Region, this group of readers has put together a typically eclectic selection of books for the next three months.

October --As special as The Kite Runner was to its readers, the consensus is that A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khalid Hosseini is more so, bringing Hosseini's compassionate storytelling and his sense of personal and national tragedy to a tale of two women that is weighted equally with despair and grave hope.

November -- In this month readers will have a wide choice of books by Ruth Rendell, an English mystery writer who combines her sharp observer's eye with an analytic view of how some of our modern vices can feed our malaise. Some of her best are The Water's Lovely, The Lake of Darkness and End in Tears. The Pikes Peak Library has a good selection of these gripping books -- choose one and come to discuss with us.

Bibliophiles meet at noon on the third Friday of the month in the Chapel. The next meeting will be October 19th.

Tuesday Bible Study

A Throne Established Forever is the title of Father Michael's Tuesday Bible study. The course will continue throughout the fall semester with these objectives: The first readings will include Matthew 1:1, Mark 10:11 and Mark 12: 35-37. Join us Tuesdays at 10:40 am following our Holy Eucharist at 10:00 am.

Weekly Healing Service

Each Thursday at noon a group of parishioners gather in the Chapel for a Service of Healing with laying on of hands and Holy Communion available. While this service has taken place for many years it has gained new importance as the members lift up all our Grace sisters and brothers, both at first Christian and at CANA, with prayers for healing and unity. As the sorrows of the larger world seem to increase, it is a true labor of love to come together and hold up the needs of all the broken places. There are prayers for family members, for one another, for reconciliation and for parishioners in need. To join in offering these intercessions within the company of the faithful is truly a gift that provides a strong center to the week.

We invite any who can add their voices to this weekly time of prayer and worship. A bonus has developed since we are meeting at First Christian; often members continue their fellowship with lunch together. All are welcome.

Vestry Meeting and Minutes

At the meeting on Tuesday, September 25th, our vestry discussed and approved demonstrating our commitment and thanks by fulfilling a portion of our annual assessment to the Diocese and the Sangre de Cristo Region. The vestry also heard plans being prepared for adult education and a new member ministry and heard reports on children's Sunday school, the recent regional meeting, the status of the action of the Ecclesiastical Court and our property dispute. Six guests attended this month's meeting.

You are invited to attend all regular monthly meetings of the Vestry. Meetings are held at La Posada del Sol Clubhouse at 2090 Mesa, on the corner of Mesa & Fillmore. Turn in the gate at La Posada del Sol -- the clubhouse is directly ahead clearly marked. The next meeting of the vestry is scheduled on Tuesday, October 23rd at 7:30 pm.

Minutes of the June 26th, July 3rd and July 31st vestry meetings are available now on our web page.
