Prayer of the Week

A Prayer attributed to St. Francis

Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

The Tidings They Are A-Changin'

Next week you will see a significant revision to the Online Tidings. Items of general interest and feature articles will be limited to an expanded version published the first week of every month. Remaining weeks will be a shortened version, limited to new items of a time-sensitive nature, the weekly calendar feature and links to our standing notices. If you have an article or idea to submit, please email it to the grace.episcopal.church@gmail.com general church address. Thank you to all of you who have provided feedback to the editor. We appreciate your interest, and are eager to hear from you at any time.

Services This Week

Sunday services this week will be at 12:45 pm at First Christian Church, on the corner of Platte and Cascade with our good friend, Dr. Gaylord Hatler, preaching. There will be no coffee hour this week, but all are encouraged to attend the Chamber Orchestra concert at 3:00 pm.

In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, today we remember Little Shepherd of the Hills Chapel in Salida, St. John the Baptist Church in Granby, St. Martha's Church in Westminster, St. Michael's Church in Telluride and St. Peter the Apostle Church in Pueblo.

The Six Month Milestone

Our first Sunday in Shove Chapel was April 1st, so we have reached the half-year point in our exiled worship from Grace Episcopal Church's property on North Tejon Street. It has been a half year marked by the remarkable commitment of a parish numbering over 500 members in admittedly adverse conditions. Still, in this adversity, we have found some wonderful hosts, the commitment of a young, knowledgeable and talented music director to a program that remains second to none and the dedication of the familiar functions of acolyte, usher, lector, chalice bearer, altar guild, choir, youth group, hospitality, bible study, vestry and others to making this church work every week.

Beginning next week we will be starting a series of short articles written by parishioners who have agreed to relate to us their impressions of the six month milestone and what it means to them. And you are invited to join in. If you would like to share your perspective about any aspect of our heritage or current programs, please contact Tidings editor at our church email address, grace.episcopal.church@gmail.com. Please be looking for this series to start in the next issue.

Fall Saturday Seasonal Supper

This is the last week to sign up for the supper scheduled on Saturday, October 13th. Hosts will be able to specify how many guest they can accommodate. Guests will be asked to bring side dishes to share. Sign up in the Fellowship Hall after church with Jan Malvern, or call her at 638-4922 to participate or host.

Outreach Ministry Fair Scheduled

On Sunday, October 28th, Grace Episcopal will host an Outreach Ministry Fair after the service to learn ways we can be involved in our community. If you are involved in a community group or are aware of a group that would like to participate, please contact Marti Lindberg at 636-1863.

Thanks from St. Michael's

"The Church of St. Michael the Archangel was established in 1957 as a chapel of Grace and St. Stephen's Church. The vision of the Rector, Vestry and people of Grace Church -- and the commitment of clergy and financial resources to that vision -- brought us into being. We express our profound gratitude to our mother church and extend our greetings and prayers during this difficult time in their parish life."

from the service bulletin for 50 Years of Faith - A Festival Eucharist, September 30, 2007

Episcopal Hymn Festival

St. Michael's will host the Episcopal Hymn Festival, sponsored by the Colorado Springs Episcopal churches, on Sunday November 4th at 4:00 pm. Choirs from six different regional churches, including Grace Episcopal, are expected to attend and sing in a spirit of unity and service to our Lord. There will also be a number of instrumentalists performing. Musicians should arrive at 3:00 PM for a warm-up.

All local Episcopalians are urged to attend this event with such a remarkable collection of performances available in one service.

MOSTrust Office Under Construction

You have been doing a great thing to further God’s work among AIDS orphans in Tanzania! The donations you have made and your support of the Youth Group’s rummage sale have brought the Building for Mission fund raising almost to completion. The building of the new MOSTrust Center in Manyoni is well under way and the challenge now is to complete the fund raising before the building is finished! This office building will help MOSTrust in Tanzania to be more efficient and to expand orphan care to meet the community’s need. The goal of $40,000 is in sight with $1,618 still to be raised. Would you please help finish the task? Donations can be sent to MOSTrust USA, Box 307, Colorado Springs, CO 80901-0307.

For additional information contact Karl H. Weiskopf at 282-7881

Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei . . . and, yes, Kyrie

Following a desire to create a setting appropriate for our Episcopal church, the staff and clergy have decided to include all components of the mass as determined by the Book of Common Prayer. A full mass is also more traditional and consistent with the earliest church settings. This means that we will be adding a Kyrie just before the Gloria near the beginning of the service.

The setting (S 90) by John Merbecke (1510? - 1585?) will be used from Advent through Lent.
William Mathias' (1934 - 1992) Gloria (S 278) will be added From Christmas until Lent.
The Willan setting (S 91) from his Missa de Sancta Maria Magdalena will be used for the rest of the year (including now).

Grace Episcopal Directory

A preliminary directory for our parish has been printed, and will be available before and after services in the Fellowship Hall. While the proofreaders were very careful, we fully expect that there will be some entry errors. Being listed or not listed does not imply anything about your membership or contributions, only that at some point you shared your contact information with us and asked to part of our parish. Let us know what needs to be corrected by emailing the church at grace.episcopal.church@gmail.com or calling 328-1125 to leave a message. A $2 donation will be requested for a copy of the directory.

New Women's Group Forming

Since the departure of our beloved Linda Seracuse, we have had no Women of Grace activities, and now is the time to begin again. Previously, we met for potluck and fellowship, then had a program of interest presented either by a guest or one of our very own parishioners with stories to tell! This group may decide after a time to join the Episcopal Church Women. At the moment, our only participation is the Episcopal Thrift House, which operates under the auspices of the ECW. Please contact Sherry Brown at 488-9783 to join up.

Mothers of Preschoolers

A joint group of mothers from First Christian and Grace Episcopal churches are meeting to provide a space in busy lives for encouragement, friendship and Christian fellowship. The goal of MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) is to provide a haven for soothing frazzled moms; an opportunity to build lifelong friendships; an accepting atmosphere with encouraging discussions; and a time when women can receive practical advice on family life from a Biblical perspective.

Using the book Dwelling -- Living Fully from the Space You call Home, Deacon Sally Ziegler from Grace will lead the discussions during the first semester. Robyn Lee will serve as the leader from FCC and Tami Eckholm from Grace. Invitations have been issued to the mothers from St. Michael's and the Chapel of Our Saviour. Child care will be provided for babies and pre-school children.

The next meeting is October 18th. For information please call Tami Ekholm at 522-1976 or Mary Lou Porter at 599-5548.

Flu Shot Clinic

The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) will be giving the flu shots on Tuesday, October 16th in the Fellowship Hall of First Christian. This clinic will be from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Please bring your friends and neighbors. The cost of the shot is $25. VNA accepts Medicare Part B, Rocky Mountain HMO and Secure Horizons. Bring your card with you.

VNA uses the proceeds from these clinics to provide home health care for low income and indigent families and individuals.

Upcoming Concerts at First Christian

On Sunday, October 7th, First Christian Church presents the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, directed by Thomas Wilson, performing - Scarlatti Portfolio by Benjamin Lees, Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 with Susan Grace, Bizet Symphony in C Major. Tickets are $8 for the concert, which begins at 3:00 pm.

Sunday, October 14th, brings the opportunity to hear the Amuse Early Instrument Ensemble directly after our service at 3:00 pm. They will perform a selection of sonatas and canzonas from the 17th and 18th century, played on recorders, cornetto, cello, harpsichord and organ, and will feature our own Choirmaster, Deke Polifka. Come and enjoy the unique sounds of these ancient instruments. A free will offering will be taken.

Grace Bibliophiles

After exploring the early days of our city and its locale in Irving Howbert's Memoirs of a Lifetime in the Pike Peak Region, this group of readers has put together a typically eclectic selection of books for the next three months.

October --As special as The Kite Runner was to its readers, the consensus is that A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khalid Hosseini is more so, bringing Hosseini's compassionate storytelling and his sense of personal and national tragedy to a tale of two women that is weighted equally with despair and grave hope.

November -- In this month readers will have a wide choice of books by Ruth Rendell, an English mystery writer who combines her sharp observer's eye with an analytic view of how some of our modern vices can feed our malaise. Some of her best are The Water's Lovely, The Lake of Darkness and End in Tears. The Pikes Peak Library has a good selection of these gripping books -- choose one and come to discuss with us.

Bibliophiles meet at noon on the third Friday of the month in the Chapel. The next meeting will be October 19th.

Tuesday Bible Study

A Throne Established Forever is the title of Father Michael's Tuesday Bible study. The course will continue throughout the fall semester with these objectives: The first readings will include Matthew 1:1, Mark 10:11 and Mark 12: 35-37. Join us Tuesdays at 10:40 am following our Holy Eucharist at 10:00 am.

Weekly Healing Service

Each Thursday at noon a group of parishioners gather in the Chapel for a Service of Healing with laying on of hands and Holy Communion available. While this service has taken place for many years, it has gained new importance as the members lift up all our Grace sisters and brothers, both at First Christian and at CANA, with prayers for healing and unity. As the sorrows of the larger world seem to increase, it is a true labor of love to come together and hold up the needs of all the broken places. There are prayers for family members, for one another, for reconciliation and for parishioners in need. To join in offering these intercessions within the company of the faithful is truly a gift that provides a strong center to the week.

We invite any who can add their voices to this weekly time of prayer and worship. A bonus has developed since we are meeting at First Christian; often members continue their fellowship with lunch together. All are welcome.

Vestry Meeting and Minutes

You are invited to attend all regular monthly meetings of the Vestry. Meetings are held at La Posada del Sol Clubhouse at 2090 Mesa, on the corner of Mesa & Fillmore. Turn in the gate at La Posada del Sol -- the clubhouse is directly ahead clearly marked. The next meeting of the vestry is scheduled on Tuesday, October 23rd at 7:30 pm.

Minutes of the August 21st vestry meetings are available now on our website. Previous month's minutes are all on the Archive page.

Hearing for Summary Arguments Postponed

Due to the large number of recent filings (over 1,000 pages) from the lawyers for Grace CANA, and our attorneys' need for adequate time to respond, the October 12th hearing date for summary arguments has been vacated. Attorneys for both sides will be meeting with the judge in the next two weeks to set a new hearing date. We will keep you posted as to when that new date will be. In the meantime our attorney, Martin Nussbaum, remains confident that we have the stronger case and will be returning to our property.

Current Filings Concerning Our Property

We will post court documents you may be interested in under Filings with the Court on the Grace Episcopal website. You will find all 1,000 pages of new filings under the headline CANA filings in response to Motion for Summary Judgment and Countermotion - September 14, 2007. The best place to start is the exhibit list to see what has been submitted. The list of affidavits is at the top of the Fischer Affidavit (Part 1 of 2).
