Prayer of the Week

For a Church Meeting

Almighty and everliving God, source of all wisdom and understanding, be present with those who take counsel for the renewal and mission of your Church. Teach us in all things to seek first your honor and glory. Guide us to perceive what is right, and grant us both the courage to pursue it and the grace to accomplish it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Parking This Sunday

Please be aware that First Christian is planning a luncheon this Sunday (January 20th) after their services. This may lead to extra congestion in the parking lot and around the church. Please remember that the Young Life lot on the northwest corner of Cascade and Boulder is available for our use.

From the Priest's Pen

Photo of Father Michael I want to encourage everyone who can be there to attend our annual Congregational Meeting and potluck for this Saturday, January 19th. Not only will we discuss the financial future of our parish, but also I will seek to cast vision and hopefully help us to better grasp the significance of our church as a parish for the 21st Century!

This upcoming weekend will be an exciting one—with two baptisms planned for the 20th and the approval of our financial goals for the future on the 19th; what better way to start the New Year?

Speaking of the New Year… Some have asked about Rite II and its recent use on Sunday mornings. The Worship Committee and I thought that since Rite I represented those who originally attended our 11:00 am Choral Eucharist on Tejon street and Rite II represented those who originally attended our 9:00 am Choral Eucharist, that is was only fair that—since we’re having one combined Choral Eucharist at 12:45 PM at First Christian Church—we’d mix up the Rites a bit; thus, giving each group an opportunity to hear their favorite Rite on Sunday mornings. (We will return to Rite I during Lent. An article for Tidings about the very real differences between Rite I and Rite II, both from our approved 1979 Book of Common Prayer, will be laid out in an up-coming article that will also present a schedule for such services by our Liturgical Resident Expert, The Rev. John Pahls.)

A BIG thank you to Mrs. Carol Nuss who has again agreed to help "man" our Visitor Table on Sunday mornings—complete, with a new crop of member assimilation brochures, visitor information, and various sign-up sheets, etc. (I hope you’ll check it out.) Since we had 500 at our Christmas services, we thought we’d had better get on the ball and provide some much-needed information for our first-time visitors to take home with them. Already, we have a number of families who have placed membership with our parish for 2008. One of those families received by me into Grace and St Stephen’s Episcopal Church is The Rev. and Mrs. Marty (and Mary) Pearsall—Marty is an Episcopal priest in semi-retirement.

This is going to be a wonderful year, as together, we help to build God’s kingdom one member at a time!

Every Member Canvass Update

Thank you for your energetic support of the Every Member Canvass. Our updated numbers are 111 pledges for a total of $311,000. Our preliminary budget is for $574,000 this year, so we still have a ways to go. If you have not received a pledge card, please contact the church office. We encourage you to bring any financial questions you may have to the annual meeting on Saturday, January 19th. If you have turned in a pledge card, donation envelopes have been assigned to you and are available in the Fellowship Hall.

Deke Polifka Organ Concert

Our own Organist and Choirmaster, Deke Polifka, is the featured performer in the ongoing Sunday afternoon concert series at First Christian next Sunday, January 27th. He holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees in piano performance from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. While an undergraduate student, he won the Brevard Music Center Concerto Competition and was a prizewinner in the MTNA Regional Collegiate Artist Competition. Deke has also had extensive training in church music, studying choral conducting with Leo Nestor and organ with Edward Moore, Gordon Stewart and Joyce Kull. Prior to moving to Colorado, he served as Organist/Choirmaster at Holy Cross Catholic Parish (Bethesda, Md.), Assistant Director of Music at Westminster Presbyterian (Alexandria, Va.) and principal accompanist for the Thomas Circle Singers and Catholic University Choruses. He will be performing works by J.S. Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude, Gerald Near, Jean Langlais, Herbert Howells and Marcel Lanquetuit. A free will offering will be taken. Please come and enjoy what promises to be a wonderful afternoon of music.

A small reception in the Parlor for Deke will follow the concert.

More Words from Our Bishop

As many of you know, all clergy are subject to a mandatory retirement age. Under Canon III.7.7, a clergy member may apply to his or her bishop for permission to continue in active ministry. In his letter granting this permission to Deacon Sally, Bishop O'Neill included the following paragraph: "I cannot tell you, Sally, how very grateful I am to you for your unwavering faithfulness, great compassion, hard work, and outstanding service to Grace Church during some very difficult times. You are a gift and a blessing not only to the people you service but to this diocese as well."

To which we add: Hear! Hear!

Final Sign-Up for the Women's Retreat

Sunday is the last chance to sign up for the Women's Retreat, Grace Upon Grace, led by our friend and leader, The Rev. Linda Seracuse. The retreat begins at 5:00 pm on Friday, February 1st and continues until Saturday afternoon, February 2nd at 4:00 pm. The cost for a single room is $90; for a double, $80; and it is possible to sign up as a day participant and that price will be determined on the number of meals. There is some scholarship assistance available. There will be a signup sheet at the Welcome desk in the Fellowship Hall, or you may call the church office at 328-1125.

As many know Linda's life has been full of trials in recent years but she says this has given her the experience of "discovering the many ways that grace shows up in our lives." Linda has always been able to give hearers the gift of combining her intellectual approach to faith deepened by her own spiritual approach to life. The atmosphere at Mt. St. Francis is very informal and participants are asked to bring Prayer Books with them. Let us rejoice and be refreshed. For further questions call Deacon Sally at 648-9350.

News from ESM

ESM Logo Happy New Year from the Staff and Volunteers of Ecumenical Social Ministries!

We are beginning a series of exciting new program initiatives as we work toward meeting our goals of reaching more of the low-income and working poor of Colorado Springs. Our emphasis is on improving education and training to increase self-sufficiency for our clients.

In our Jobs Program, we have begun job skills classes and will be adding GED certification training and ESL classes in the near future. We will also begin offering nutrition classes to help teach clients how to stretch their grocery dollars. Future trainings will focus on similar topics designed to enhance skills and education in all programs. The Housing Program has already been very successful with its budgeting workshop, which is a mandatory requirement for clients to receive rental assistance.

As always, we gratefully accept in-kind donations of food, clothing, toiletries, hygiene items, linens, and small household items. Men's clothing is a particularly high need. Goods may be dropped off between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please contact Christine at 228-6781 with questions.

Thank you for your continued support! We are proud to be an extension of our founding churches and part of your mission and outreach work in the community. Blessings for a Happy New Year!

ps. Check out our recently redesigned Web site at www.ecusocmin.org to learn more about our programs, volunteering, or to donate online!

Motion to Preserve Assets

McWilliams House East Porch McWilliams House South Porch McWilliams House West Porch McWilliams House West Side View The dispute over all our church property continues in the court. Recent visible deterioration to the exterior of McWilliams House, used as the parish offices at the corner of Tejon and Willamette, is clearly seen in the attached photographs. On January 11th, we filed a five page Motion to Preserve Assets asking that the court take specific action to insure the Grace-CANA vestry cannot dispose of property (including emptying bank accounts or selling/transferring title to automobiles or real estate), cannot raid trusts, and must provide a plan for proper maintenance and upkeep to all disputed property in their control. The motion also includes the right to inspect the property with a licensed contractor with reasonable notice.
