Prayer of the Week

From Eucharistic Prayer C

Lord God of our Fathers: God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. Amen.

Every Member Canvass Update

Thank you for your energetic support of the Every Member Canvass and for your confidence in our plans for the parish in 2008. We are almost two thirds of the way toward reaching our financial goal. If you have not received a pledge card, please contact the church office. If you have turned in a pledge card, donation envelopes have been assigned to you and are available in the Fellowship Hall.

From the Priest's Pen

Photo of Father Michael I want to begin by thanking everyone who made an effort to come out and be with us this past Saturday night for our annual congregational meeting. As those of you who were there can testify, we had a packed house with a wonderful banquet of scrumptious foods and desserts. Indeed, we have much to be thankful for… A new Vestry. A new budget for 2008. And, a new vision with measurable goals and objectives for the New Year.

The next day, we got to see our vision lived out right before our eyes with the baptisms of Irene and Megan. What a beautiful sight to see these precious lambs of God, in their baptismal gowns, paraded up and down the aisle for our congregation to receive as our youngest members in 2008. Indeed, God is on the move!

I also want to thank David and Clelia for their outstanding presentations Saturday night. Again, we are so blessed with a wonderful cadre of dedicated men and women who serve our parish on a daily basis. I thought Ed Brown's discussion of the Every Member Canvass was direct and well stated. Our goal is a stretch, but working together and keeping the focus on loving God and loving our neighbors, we will be able to accomplish much with what you have generously pledged.

As was announced at our annual congregational meeting, we will be spending Holy Week at Shove chapel on the campus of Colorado College. As you will remember, we had 500 for our Christmas services, therefore we felt it necessary to move our Holy Week services to Shove chapel in order that we might accommodate larger crowds. It will also be a marvelous opportunity to celebrate our one year anniversary in exile. Indeed, we have much to be thankful for as we reflect over the many milestones of corporate achievement during 2007. +Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam+

In closing, I want to remind you of a few dates that are coming up right around the corner: our Ash Wednesday services our planned for February 6th --with a 7:00 am service; 12:00 noon service; and 6:30 pm service (these will all take place at First Christian Church). Also, starting on Sunday February 10th, Father Marty Pearsall and I will lead an adult Bible class on the subject of spiritual disciplines--this will be our Lenten study to prepare us for the Feast of the Resurrection. (More details to follow.)

May God bless you this week as together we seek to build up the body in love and to good works.

What’s Missing in the New Year?

Do you find your mind and tongue searching for the words, “We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord…” before the invitation to communion on Sunday? That prayer—first named the Prayer of Humble Access in the Scottish Prayer Book (the first Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Samuel Seabury, was consecrated by bishops of the Anglican Church of Scotland) of 1637—is optional in Rite I services, but the prayer is not recited in Rite II Eucharist services. The Prayer of Humble Access has traditionally been said by the celebrant and people before the invitation, “The Gifts of God for the People of God…,” in Rite I Eucharist services at Grace Episcopal. Thus we recited the Prayer of Humble Access in the Advent season when we celebrated the Rite I Eucharist, but we have not recited it in the Epiphany season during which we have celebrated the Rite II Eucharist.

Deke Polifka Organ Concert

Our own Organist and Choirmaster, Deke Polifka, is the featured performer this Sunday in the ongoing Sunday afternoon concert series at First Christian. The program ranges from classic works by Dietrich Buxtehude (Praelüdium in F sharp minor) and J.S. Bach (Prelude and Fugue in G Major, BWV 541) to more contemporary works of Gerald Near(Adoro te devote (Prelude and Four Variations)), Jean Langlais(Ave maria, ave maris stella from Trois Paraphrases Grégoriennes) and Herbert Howells (Master Tallis’s Testament). Parishioners will note the range of voices and contrasts available on the instrument at First Christian not usually heard during services.

A free will offering will be taken. Please come and enjoy what promises to be a wonderful afternoon of music. A small reception in the Parlor for Deke will follow the concert.

Women of Grace Organizational Meeting

Women of Grace will have an organizational meeting at the home of Spot Holmes, 1219 N. Tejon, at 6:30 pm on Thursday, January 31st. A ham will be provided, and others are asked to bring side dishes to accompany.

We will discuss how we think our group should proceed into the future, appoint a leader to help guide us, and consider whether or not we wish to be a part of Episcopal Church Women (ECW).

Connie Eggers, our resident brilliant professional liturgical needle worker, will present a short program on Why the change in colors--what do the symbols tell us--and other "secrets" we miss!

We will plan to end no later than 8:30 pm, having enjoyed fellowship, education, and planning for the future in our own "small group". All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Please let Sherry Brown 488-9783 or Spot Holmes at 473-4627 know if you will attend.

In the Life of the Parish

Congratulations to Bruce MacHaffie, Lynn Olney, Mary Lou Porter and Chuck Theobald, who were elected to our vestry at the annual meeting on Saturday. Also at the meeting, Fr. Michael presented our vision of the future of the parish, including a support structure for small group ministries, and a coordinated system of key committees overseen by the vestry. His presentation is posted on our website. If you would like to see the 2007 financial report, or the 2008 budget, please contact Marti in the office for a copy.

Congratulations also to Irene Calista, daughter of Rich and Amy Paul, and Megan Grace, daughter of Dale and Amanda Hlavacek, who were received into the household of God through the sacrament of Baptism. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them inquiring and discerning hearts, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Book of Common Prayer p. 308

Shrove Tuesday Comes Early

Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday and Lent, falls early in 2008, because Easter falls nearly as early as it can on the Western calendar. Easter occurs on the first Sunday after the full moon on or after the vernal equinox. Easter always falls between March 22nd and April 25th inclusive. This year Easter falls on March 23rd, the earliest Easter since 1913! So Shrove Tuesday falls on February 5th. If you want your fill of Shrove Tuesday pancakes before the penitential season of Lent, here’s a recipe from Robie’s Country Store & Deli, in New Hampshire, a campaign stop for many of 2008’s Presidential hopefuls.

Robie’s Buttermilk Flapjacks (from Saveur magazine)

2 C flour
2 T granulated sugar
4 t baking powder
1 t baking soda
1 t fine salt
2 C lowfat buttermilk
4 T melted butter
1 t vanilla
2 beaten eggs
Extra butter to fry in
Put dry ingredients in a large bowl, whisk to combine and set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together buttermilk, melted butter, vanilla and eggs. Pour the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture and whisk together until just combined, to make a thick batter. (For more tender pancakes, don’t overmix.)

Heat an 8” nonstick skillet over medium heat. Ad 1 T butter and heat until the butter’s foam subsides. Ladle in about ½ C of the batter. Cook the flapjack, turning once until deep golden brown on both sides, about 5 minutes total. (These can be cooked on a griddle, but the buttered nonstick skillet is the secret to the pancake’s crispy edges.)

Transfer to a large plate, keep warm, while cooking remaining pancakes, adding additional butter with each pancake. Serve hot with topping of choice. Serves 4, generously.

Update on Legal Issues

Summary Judgment Hearing Delayed

Arguments for summary judgment will not be heard on February 1st, as previously announced. Instead, that date will be reserved for a scheduling conference with Judge Schwartz and the attorneys involved in the property litigation. Members of the parish will not be allowed to attend the scheduling conference. We will keep you posted as to the new date for summary arguments, which you may wish to attend.

"The church property legally belongs to the Bishop . . ." Father Donald Armstrong, speaking to the Annual Parish Meeting of Grace Church and St. Stephen's on January 31, 1988 as noted in the minutes.

Counterclaim Filed Against the Diocese and Bishop O’Neill

Dennis Hartley, attorney for Don Armstrong, and Bruce Wright, attorney for the secessionist leadership at Grace CANA, have filed motions to dismiss the Counterclaim and Third-Party Complaint against their clients for declaratory and equitable relief and have countersued the Diocese and the Bishop for monetary damages, legal costs and fees. You may read the Armstrong Motion to Dismiss and the Individual's Motion to Dismiss, which includes their Counterclaim for damages from the Bishop and Diocese as well as supporting exhibits on our website under Filings with the Court.
