I want to begin by thanking everyone who made an effort to come out and be with us this past Saturday night for our annual congregational meeting. As those of you who were there can testify, we had a packed house with a wonderful banquet of scrumptious foods and desserts. Indeed, we have much to be thankful for… A new Vestry. A new budget for 2008. And, a new vision with measurable goals and objectives for the New Year.
The next day, we got to see our vision lived out right before our eyes with the baptisms of Irene and Megan. What a beautiful sight to see these precious lambs of God, in their baptismal gowns, paraded up and down the aisle for our congregation to receive as our youngest members in 2008. Indeed, God is on the move!
I also want to thank David and Clelia for their outstanding presentations Saturday night. Again, we are so blessed with a wonderful cadre of dedicated men and women who serve our parish on a daily basis. I thought Ed Brown's discussion of the Every Member Canvass was direct and well stated. Our goal is a stretch, but working together and keeping the focus on loving God and loving our neighbors, we will be able to accomplish much with what you have generously pledged.
As was announced at our annual congregational meeting, we will be spending Holy Week at Shove chapel on the campus of Colorado College. As you will remember, we had 500 for our Christmas services, therefore we felt it necessary to move our Holy Week services to Shove chapel in order that we might accommodate larger crowds. It will also be a marvelous opportunity to celebrate our one year anniversary in exile. Indeed, we have much to be thankful for as we reflect over the many milestones of corporate achievement during 2007. +Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam+
In closing, I want to remind you of a few dates that are coming up right around the corner: our Ash Wednesday services our planned for February 6th --with a 7:00 am service; 12:00 noon service; and 6:30 pm service (these will all take place at First Christian Church). Also, starting on Sunday February 10th, Father Marty Pearsall and I will lead an adult Bible class on the subject of spiritual disciplines--this will be our Lenten study to prepare us for the Feast of the Resurrection. (More details to follow.)
May God bless you this week as together we seek to build up the body in love and to good works.
A free will offering will be taken. Please come and enjoy what promises to be a wonderful afternoon of music. A small reception in the Parlor for Deke will follow the concert.
We will discuss how we think our group should proceed into the future, appoint a leader to help guide us, and consider whether or not we wish to be a part of Episcopal Church Women (ECW).
Connie Eggers, our resident brilliant professional liturgical needle worker, will present a short program on Why the change in colors--what do the symbols tell us--and other "secrets" we miss!
We will plan to end no later than 8:30 pm, having enjoyed fellowship, education, and planning for the future in our own "small group". All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Please let Sherry Brown 488-9783 or Spot Holmes at 473-4627 know if you will attend.
Congratulations also to Irene Calista, daughter of Rich and Amy Paul, and Megan Grace, daughter of Dale and Amanda Hlavacek, who were received into the household of God through the sacrament of Baptism. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them inquiring and discerning hearts, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Book of Common Prayer p. 308
Robie’s Buttermilk Flapjacks (from Saveur magazine)
2 C flour
2 T granulated sugar
4 t baking powder
1 t baking soda
1 t fine salt
2 C lowfat buttermilk
4 T melted butter
1 t vanilla
2 beaten eggs
Extra butter to fry in
Put dry ingredients in a large bowl, whisk to combine and set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together buttermilk, melted butter, vanilla and eggs. Pour the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture and whisk together until just combined, to make a thick batter. (For more tender pancakes, don’t overmix.)
Heat an 8” nonstick skillet over medium heat. Ad 1 T butter and heat until the butter’s foam subsides. Ladle in about ½ C of the batter. Cook the flapjack, turning once until deep golden brown on both sides, about 5 minutes total. (These can be cooked on a griddle, but the buttered nonstick skillet is the secret to the pancake’s crispy edges.)
Transfer to a large plate, keep warm, while cooking remaining pancakes, adding additional butter with each pancake. Serve hot with topping of choice. Serves 4, generously.
"The church property legally belongs to the Bishop . . ." Father Donald Armstrong, speaking to the Annual Parish Meeting of Grace Church and St. Stephen's on January 31, 1988 as noted in the minutes.
