Prayer of the Week

Saint Andrew

Almighty God, who gave such grace to your apostle Andrew that he readily obeyed the call of your Son Jesus Christ, and brought his brother with him: Give us, who are called by your holy Word, grace to follow him without delay, and to bring those near to us into his gracious presence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Be Still and Know That I am God

The weekly gift of our Sunday worship marks a breathing space and a blessed time for reflection and prayer. It is important that we prepare ourselves to receive the word and sacrament of God. Let us all attempt to quiet ourselves as we enter the sanctuary so that we may hush the tumult of the world and be able to hear the still, small voice of God.

Diocesan Cycle of Prayer

In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, today we remember Trinity Church in Greeley, St. Michael and All Angels' Church in Denver, the Front Range Region of our Diocese, and its Missioner, Mike Houlik, our Diocesan Chancellors and our Diocesan Standing Committee.

Manger Mission in Advent

Our traditional Manger Mission begins on December 1st and runs through Christmas Day. There will be a manger in the Fellowship Hall where we will be collecting new baby items to give to the Life Support Center. The center supports emergency and transitional needs of families in crisis, including clothing, formula and diapers. Services are not intended to be long-term. Items for you to consider for donation could include blankets, clothes, diapers, bottles, jackets, formula, toys, etc. Please bless an infant this season in the honor of the Christ Child

Choral Evensong

Shove Chapel Organ and Choir On the evening of December 7th we will invite the entire community to join us for a Choral Evensong at Shove Chapel, 1010 N. Nevada Avenue on the Colorado College campus, starting at 6:00 pm. The St. Stephen's and Taylor Choirs will present music of Herbert Howells, C.V. Stanford, Andrew Carter and Paul Manz as we enter the season of Advent. Please spread the word about this event to those you know who might be interested, plan to join us and bring a friend.

Advent Family Workshop

Our annual Advent Workshop will be held in conjunction with First Christian on Saturday, December 1st from 3:00 to 5:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. There will be craft items to make and take home, and a chance to prepare your family's advent wreath. You may bring your advent ring and decorate it with the greens available. We will also have rings for sale for $6.50 and candle sets for $3.00. A great hot chili dinner will be available. Please call the church office by Tuesday to RSVP at 328-1125. Sunday School children brought home a flyer that can also be used to reserve space. Note that the Colorado Springs Festival of Lights parade will be marching down Tejon at about 6:00 pm. What a great way to prepare for the first Sunday in Advent.

Parish Nurse Jill Wasinger

Our parish nurse is Jill Wasinger. What does Jill do? The parish nurse acts as a consultant on health care issues for all families involved in the parish. She can do blood pressure checks or provide an extra set of ears if you have a visit to the doctor. She can be reached at 473-7366 or you may leave a message on the church office number, 328-1125. Call her for more information about what she can do for you.

Jill has also taken over heading the St. Theresa's Guild. Volunteers prepare and deliver meals to parishioners who have experienced a death, illness, a birth, or other changes in their lives. Please let her know if you are in need of this ministry, or if you know of anyone in our church that we may help.

We also want to take time to thank Chrys Hutka who managed St. Theresa's Guild so ably for the last few years! She really helped to make it a smooth transition through these past months.

Hanging of the Greens

The festivities will begin about 2:30 p.m. on this Sunday to help decorate First Christian Church. There are still spots open if you have a need to do more cooking for the dinner! We are providing soup, breads, and dessert for all of the hungry workers. Let Marti Lindberg know if you would like to help provide food. See you there!

The Episcopal Church and the Revised Common Lectionary

A Lectionary is a table of readings from Scripture appointed to be read at public worship.  The association of particular texts with specific days began in the 4th century.  The Lectionary developed by the Roman Catholic Church after Vatican II provided for a three-year cycle of Sunday readings.  This Roman lectionary provided the basis for the lectionary in The Book of Common Prayer 1979 as well as those developed by many other denominations.

The Common Lectionary, published in 1983, was an ecumenical project of several American and Canadian denominations, developed out of a concern for the unity of the Church and a desire for a common experience of Scripture.  It was intended as a harmonization of the many different denominational approaches to the three-year lectionary.

The Revised Common Lectionary, published in 1992, takes into account constructive criticism of the Common Lectionary based on the evaluation of its trial use and, like the current prayer-book lectionary, is a three-year cycle of Sunday Eucharistic readings in which MATTHEW, MARK and LUKE are read in successive years with some material from JOHN read in each year. The Revised Common Lectionary preserves around 90% of the Gospel readings in the Lectionary of The Book of Common Prayer 1979.

The 2006 General Convention of the Episcopal Church adopted the Revised Common Lectionary effective on the First Sunday in Advent, 2007. If you have questions about the Lectionary, you may contact Clay Morris at the Episcopal Church Center in New York at 800-334-7626.

Quiet Day on December 7th

On the morning of December 7th we will begin the season of Advent with a gift of silence. To clear our minds and hearts for the coming of the Christ Child we invite our friends from St. Michael's, St. Raphael's and our hosts at First Christian Church to join in our annual Quiet Day. As usual we will meet at 9:00 am for Morning Prayer in the Chapel and then observe a meditative time of silence until a light lunch is served. A booklet of devotions, prayers, and poems will be available. Please call Deacon Sally at 648-9350 or the church office at 328-1125 to register.
